Motor Trader’s launch their own scrappage schemes

Kia dealers are now going to offer up to £2,000 for cars traded in over 7 years and up to 10 years as long as they have a valid MOT certificate. The only car that is not covered by the deal is the newly released car, the Sorento.

Now that the government’s scrappage scheme has ended, motor traders are cashing in on the idea and launching their own to boost sales. Kia particularly are only running theirs until the end of March in an attempt to boost the brand. Time will tell to see if other traders are going to follow suit. Locations of uninsured drivers revealed…

A new survey carried out recently shows the locations of the highest percentage of uninsured drivers. These are the locations where the highest number of drivers have an IN10 on their license, this is the conviction code for driving without motor insurance. The town with the highest percentage was Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire which was around 28% of drivers had the IN10 conviction code. Coming in a close second with 24% was HebdenBridge, West Yorkshire. Out of the top 10, the last on the list was Notting Hill in London at 12%. Its good to see that no Kent towns made it to the top 10. If any driver is caught driving without motor insurance, there is a chance of a £200 fine and 6 points on your license, in worse cases, it could mean the car will get impounded and then a £150 collection fee.

Parking charges being dropped in UK Hospitals?

A confusing plan put forward by Andy Burnham has put a lot of speculation into why Hospital car parks are not free in the UK. He claims that there is a scheme to make parking free for inpatients and their visitors that are staying for a long period of time. Patients that have regular appointments are looking to have their parking charges capped or removed completely.

Clearly the argument is that Hospital car parks are free in Scotland & Wales now, why shouldn’t they be in England? Making up the money is going to be tough for the NHS, especially as they are already in financial difficulty. As yet, a final decision hasn’t been made so watch this space.

Massive 17 Year Deal to Host Grand Prix

It has been in the news recently that Silverstone, the British Grand Prix track is going to host to British Grand Prix for up to 17 years! Starting from 2010. There is a lot of development to be done on the track, pit lanes etc but it’s all in planning now that they have got the deal.

Now that the deal is going ahead, Great Britain and its drivers will always have a Great British Grand Prix track to come home to  at some point in the F1 Season. For people that know Silverstone and maybe even raced their cars on it know of its history and how much it will bring to have it re-developed onto the Formula 1 Calendar.

Some drivers hide convictions for cheap insurance

Research carried out recently has shown that the public believe most accidents are caused by the use of a mobile phone at the wheel. Also it has been revealed that a lot of motorists will hide their convictions of using a mobile phone when driving or even speeding tickets. They will not tell the relevant insurance company of this therefore making their insurance cheaper. The research shows that the public who are being honested with their status are having to pay more for their insurance compared to others getting away with it.

Time will tell whether the government will crack down on either the convictions or the implications of being caught.

Costs of running a car have risen since 2007

I’m sure i’m not the only one noticing how much it is costing to run a car these days. With petrol prices at an all time high and tax seeming to go up little by little every year, its no surprise that its costing us more to run our cars than it did two years ago.

Statistics have officially been released to say exactly how much we are spending on our cars and its easily in the thousands. The actual cost of repairs and insurance have been kept down due to the economic climate and the recession. This is mainly due to various companies/garages competing for the business.  The last two years have been very difficult for the country with regards to money and the credit crunch but hopefully soon we will be out of it and prices will start to level out if not drop.

General Motors find Temporary replacement

We posted recently about the GM boss resigning and staying in control till a replacement is found. Well it now seems like one has been found, but only on a temporary basis. His name is Nick Reilly and he is the former boss of motor company Vauxhall. He  is only taking over operations of General Motors Europe, not the whole General Motor’s company. He is said to have a lot of experience dealing with the opel/vauxhall brands so is an ideal fit for the role. We’ll see how this affects the search for a new CEO for the General Motors company but we’ll keep you posted!

Its official, Men will pay more for car insurance!

Drastically more too. Statistics that have been revealed recently say that over 70 % of men in the country pay more for their motor car insurance than women.

Young people always pay more for their car insurance than say a mid-twenties person but a young man can pay anything from £1,000 – £2,000 more than a young women of the same age and experience. This is ridiculous as a few years later, the insurance for a man can drop by this exact amount drastically all of a sudden and the insurance premiums begin to level out and the difference smaller between men and women. For women there is naturally a reduction as they get older in their insurance premium but its certainly not anywhere near the same as it would be as a man gets older. The male insurance premium can reduce by up to 50% over 4-5 years or maybe less.

General Motors Keep Hold of Vauxhall

After much deliberation of a take over. Opel/Vauxhall are staying up with GM (General Motors). It comes as quite a shock to the motor trade industry as it was almost certain that they would be moving to Magna International based in Canada.

The reason that the take over has fallen through could be from the 4.5 Billion Euro loan they received from the German government.  According to GM, the European market has improved and so has their own financial stability (this could be from the huge loan!). It proves that its possible to revive a fallen motor company, especially in the current climate. For Vauxhall/Opel, its onwards and upwards, working on what they do best and improving their vast range of vehicles.

Congestion charge rises & affects fleets

It has been announced recently that the congestion charge is going to rise for London. It will go from £8.00 to £10.00.

Previously those companies which had fleet cars and fleet insurance would pay a reduced fee by £1.00 to £7.00 but not they are going to have to pay full price to have their fleet cars go through into London.

There is a system that they are introducing call autopay where by the user can ask the system to automatically debit their account depending on how many trips they make into London and pay via credit or debit card. This could be useful for fleet car owners as if they sign up for the system, they will receive a discount of £1.00, bringing the cost to only £9.00 a trip.

There are now talks of introducing a congestion charge in the city of Cambridge. We’ll keep you posted.
