General Motors find Temporary replacement

We posted recently about the GM boss resigning and staying in control till a replacement is found. Well it now seems like one has been found, but only on a temporary basis. His name is Nick Reilly and he is the former boss of motor company Vauxhall. He  is only taking over operations of General Motors Europe, not the whole General Motor’s company. He is said to have a lot of experience dealing with the opel/vauxhall brands so is an ideal fit for the role. We’ll see how this affects the search for a new CEO for the General Motors company but we’ll keep you posted!

New car sales higher in October!

The opposite to whats happening with used car sales is happening with new car sales! Motor car sales have risen by around 30% last month. The sales are due mainly to the extension of the scrappage scheme, in fact around 20% of the sales have been through the scrappage scheme.

The demand for fleet vehicles has also gone up from businesses which is good for fleet dealers. Last October there was around a 20% fall so to be up by so much this October is very good news. It is expected that sales will continue to go up for the next couple of months to the end of the year with fleet demands gradually decreasing. Watch this space!

Drop in Fleet sizes for UK Fleet Companies

It has been reported there has been a small percentage drop in the size of fleets for UK fleet companies. The drop is only just under 10 percent but this is likely to make a big impact across the big fleet companies. The reason for the drop is likely to be the recession, with the big merger of Lloyds & HBOS taking the largest chunk of the market.

Fleet companies that are going to be affected the most are likely to be the smaller fleet companies which naturally have smaller amount of fleets. The fleet sizes have not been this low since 2003.

General Motors Keep Hold of Vauxhall

After much deliberation of a take over. Opel/Vauxhall are staying up with GM (General Motors). It comes as quite a shock to the motor trade industry as it was almost certain that they would be moving to Magna International based in Canada.

The reason that the take over has fallen through could be from the 4.5 Billion Euro loan they received from the German government.  According to GM, the European market has improved and so has their own financial stability (this could be from the huge loan!). It proves that its possible to revive a fallen motor company, especially in the current climate. For Vauxhall/Opel, its onwards and upwards, working on what they do best and improving their vast range of vehicles.

Used car sales dropping rapidly

Motor car sales are beginning to drop fast in a short space of time according to latest research on the internet.

Car values at auctions are falling and internet prices are falling too. Whether the recession is still hitting the country and affecting car prices, its not easy to tell but all of a sudden prices have dropped and there must be a reason. It has literally been over the last month that companies have started to find prices have dropped in the motor trade. In the motor trade industry, companies and individuals are apparently nervous about the prices they are going to pay for vehicles. We shall keep you updated or any other trends in the motor trade or car industry.

Aviva hire new CFO from Willis

Big news in the insurance business. Aviva, growing as they are into a global company have recently hired Patrick Regan, a COO for Willis.

A big move and undoubtedly left a bit gap to fill at Willis, especially after him setting up another Willis company last year. He joins Aviva on their group board and will play a large role in the business. Having more than 21 years experience in both the UK and US, definitely brings insurance experience to the table.

Congestion charge rises & affects fleets

It has been announced recently that the congestion charge is going to rise for London. It will go from £8.00 to £10.00.

Previously those companies which had fleet cars and fleet insurance would pay a reduced fee by £1.00 to £7.00 but not they are going to have to pay full price to have their fleet cars go through into London.

There is a system that they are introducing call autopay where by the user can ask the system to automatically debit their account depending on how many trips they make into London and pay via credit or debit card. This could be useful for fleet car owners as if they sign up for the system, they will receive a discount of £1.00, bringing the cost to only £9.00 a trip.

There are now talks of introducing a congestion charge in the city of Cambridge. We’ll keep you posted.

Peer Pressure Drivers

“Peer Pressure Drivers” are those young drivers who may change the way they drive to show off to their friends. Most young drivers admit they will change the way they drive if there is one person or more in the car.

This is dangerous for these driving habits may be not wearing seatbelts or driving without care on the roads. Both of which lead to accidents and the death of young drivers.

We recently blogged about insurance and that young drivers often drive and risk getting caught without insurance, but this just shows the lack of education that young drivers get on driving and the downsides to doing all of these things.
