Tougher punishments for uninsured drivers?

Some time ago, we done a post on uninsured drivers and the fact that some of them are getting away with paying less for a fine than they would for their insurance premium.

Building upon this issue which is clearly still in the media’s eye. Either tougher regulations are said to be put in place or a different solution found to stop drivers and especially young drivers driving around without car insurance.

Some insurers are apparently already trialling a payd (pay as you drive) scheme which naturally lowers the cost of the insurance premium and is useful for those young drivers that are perhaps students or don’t require the use of a car all the time. Its a possibility or there is also the possibility of making driving tests tougher and harsher to stop people passing that could be a risk on the road. If theres any more news on this, i’ll post it on the blog.

Uninsured drivers mainly in London

Research carried out recently shows that the highest percentage of people driver a car without insurance are in Greater London.  People that own a vehicle now and don’t have insurance, whether they drive it or not will receive a fine of £100. It is being pushed that its simply not worth the risk not getting car insurance.

Closely behind London was Merseyside and Manchester. Figures of around 500 vehicles a day are taken each day because of no car insurance.

Research shows majority of drivers owned their first car in their teens

Male drivers are apparently most likely to see owning their first car is a rite of passage opposed to female drivers who are more likely to get their first car for free.

Male drivers nowadays are buying more powerful cars at an earlier age which is one major cause for high insurance premiums. Some of the time however insurance premiums are high purely because of its a young male driver. Shockingly, one out of five drivers will experience an accident in their first year of drivers.

Fines for uninsured drivers better than paying their premium?

It has been reported recently that in some cases, uninsured drivers are likely to pay less for a fine than they are for their insurance premium for the year.

Fines as small as £50.00 could be given out to uninsured drivers, meaning that for young drivers who could pay £2,500 – £3,000 a year for insurance, could be getting a better deal. Uninsured drivers are the cause of well over 100 road traffic deaths and surely the fines should be stepped up massively if paying a fine and losing their car isn’t ennough of an incentive for young drivers to buy car insurance.

Female drivers getting ripped off for insurance?

It has been revealed recently that female only car insurers are charging through the roof for car insurance where other general car insurance providers would charge a signficant amount less. In most cases, these women only insurers offer other benefits to going with them however it seems that many people are weighing up these benefits to save what could be up to £700 on their total insurance premium.

Car sales on the rise

Latest research claims that last month in August car sales rose up to 5% higher than they were last August. Naturally we believe this is because of the government scrappage scheme. As car sales actually keep rising this year, it holds our government in good stead to get out of this ridiculous credit crunch.

Ford is still dominating the car sales with the highest percentage made, with vauxhall as always a close second.  All the major players in the car industry are now calling for an extension to the scrappage to help benefit the car industry. Hopefully September will also have a good month, especially with the introduction of the new number plate.

Disabled drivers struggle to get insurance

In recent news it has been discovered that insurers are now able to refuse to give out insurance premiums to disabled drivers with overly-modified cars.

With millions of disabled drivers out there, insurers are finding ways in the legislation to disallow higher premiums to either disabled badge holders or even disabled drivers.

The way we see it is that it should not be difficult for disabled drivers to get a quote for insurance and shouldn’t be refused car insurance from any insurer. If anything they are less likely to be at risk of accident opposed to other boy racer drivers with hugely modified cars.
