Fleet managers – Consider the benefits of going Electric

With electric cars becoming more and more popular now, fleet managers are having to consider moving over the electric car for their fleets.

To try and push the electric car in the fleet market, there are lots of benefits that are being enforced. This includes saving a significant amount of money as electric cars are exempt from road tax and reduce costs for national insurance. The electric cars themselves are going to go down in price, as much as the thousands not hundreds. At the moment the electric car isn’t quite practical enough with questions being asked about charging stations and the how long the cars can run for. The government is going to lose millions on making the necessary arrangements for car tax etc. as well as installing charging stations at garages and homes.

I believe that these issues will be addressed and fleet managers will be more inclined to move to electric vehicles but at the moment it just doesn’t seem practical.

Tip for fleet managers – reduce those petrol costs!

We have done articles previously for fleet companies and about how the one cost they are all trying to keep down is fuel consumption. With prices well over £1 a litre for both diesel and petrol, its no wonder they look to cut this cost first.

Well some fleet companies are starting to cut this cost, but only by reducing the amount of business miles that they put as an allowance each year. This means not all business trips will be accounted for and only the urgent, most essential trips are done. This makes sense for fleet managers but not necessarily for the empolyees using the fleet vehicles. The plan is being run in some companies so with a combination of fuel prices getting lowered, this should be some serious money saving.

Small fleet of Toyotas to watch traffic

Traffic Surveillance teams are looking to change their current fleet of surveillance vehicles to the compact Toyota IQ. They have more space and are likely to carry more equipment than the current fleet of smart cars currently on the road.

At present the 1 litre version of the iQ is being trialled in Manchester, Devon & Cornwall. The Police like the reliability of the car and it has a great reputation. While long term arrangements are in place for trials. It is likely the whole range of fleet cars will be replaced.

New Peugeot Van – Supports up to 5 passengers

Heres some interesting news for fleet owners, the new Crew Van from Peugeot has been announced with pictures all over the internet. It can support up to 5 passengers and still carry the same load as the previous van it was built around. Naturally the seats can fold away to increase the storage and is still classed as a van rather than a car allowing fleet owners to claim back VAT.  It is available now from dealers at a price of under £14,000.

New car sales higher in October!

The opposite to whats happening with used car sales is happening with new car sales! Motor car sales have risen by around 30% last month. The sales are due mainly to the extension of the scrappage scheme, in fact around 20% of the sales have been through the scrappage scheme.

The demand for fleet vehicles has also gone up from businesses which is good for fleet dealers. Last October there was around a 20% fall so to be up by so much this October is very good news. It is expected that sales will continue to go up for the next couple of months to the end of the year with fleet demands gradually decreasing. Watch this space!

Congestion charge rises & affects fleets

It has been announced recently that the congestion charge is going to rise for London. It will go from £8.00 to £10.00.

Previously those companies which had fleet cars and fleet insurance would pay a reduced fee by £1.00 to £7.00 but not they are going to have to pay full price to have their fleet cars go through into London.

There is a system that they are introducing call autopay where by the user can ask the system to automatically debit their account depending on how many trips they make into London and pay via credit or debit card. This could be useful for fleet car owners as if they sign up for the system, they will receive a discount of £1.00, bringing the cost to only £9.00 a trip.

There are now talks of introducing a congestion charge in the city of Cambridge. We’ll keep you posted.
