Automotive giant Stellantis, British AI company Wayve and Uber have announced plans to work together on the development and deployment of large-scale robotaxi fleets.
The partnership has immediately reignited debate over the future of transport, with supporters calling it a breakthrough moment for mobility and critics questioning whether the technology is truly ready for public roads.
The newly announced alliance brings together three companies with very different strengths.
Stellantis, one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, brings extensive automotive expertise and a portfolio of popular brands.
Wayve contributes the artificial intelligence technology designed to allow vehicles to navigate complex road environments autonomously, while Uber provides the platform that could eventually connect robotaxis with millions of passengers.
Together, the companies hope to move beyond small-scale testing and create autonomous ride-hailing services capable of operating at fleet level across the UK.
It's the latest sign that the autonomous vehicle industry is shifting from experimentation towards real-world deployment.
For years, self-driving vehicles seemed permanently stuck in the testing phase.
