For many motorists, that's usually the point where the warning gets ignored.
According to new data from vehicle diagnostics specialist Topdon Europe, that could be a mistake.
Analysis of more than 340,000 diagnostic sessions across Europe has revealed that catalytic converter-related warnings are now the single most common vehicle fault recorded across the continent.
The culprit is a fault code known as P0420, which indicates the vehicle's catalytic converter is no longer working as efficiently as the onboard system expects.
While most drivers will never remember the code itself, many will recognise its appearance through an engine warning light or emissions-related alert on the dashboard.
What makes the finding particularly interesting is that catalytic converters rarely attract much attention until something goes wrong.
Hidden beneath the vehicle as part of the exhaust system, their job is to reduce harmful emissions before they leave the exhaust pipe.
When working properly, drivers hardly notice them. When they begin to fail, however, problems can quickly become expensive.
The warning doesn't always mean the catalytic converter itself has failed. A worn oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, contaminated fuel or other emissions-related issues can trigger the same alert.
That partly explains why the code appears so frequently across a wide range of vehicle makes, models and ages.
For fleet operators and commercial vehicle owners, the findings highlight a growing maintenance challenge.
Modern vehicles are packed with technology designed to monitor emissions performance continuously.
While this helps reduce pollution, it also means faults that might once have gone unnoticed now generate immediate warnings that require investigation.
Ignoring the problem can have consequences beyond a glowing dashboard light.
Vehicles affected by catalytic converter inefficiency may produce higher emissions, consume more fuel and suffer reduced performance.
In the UK, unresolved faults can also lead to MOT failures, creating unexpected downtime and repair costs.
The data also underlines how dependent modern motorists have become on diagnostic technology.
The study was based on hundreds of thousands of fault-reading sessions carried out using vehicle diagnostic tools, with the UK representing the largest user base on the platform, accounting for nearly 200,000 active users.
In an era when attention often focuses on electric vehicles, autonomous technology and connected cars, the most common automotive problem in Europe turns out to be something far less glamorous: an exhaust component quietly doing its job beneath the vehicle.
