MPs have launched a major inquiry into the Government’s new Road Safety Strategy, marking the first comprehensive review of national road‑safety policy in more than a decade.
The Transport Committee will examine whether the strategy’s proposals — published earlier this month — go far enough to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured on British roads.
The Government’s strategy aims to significantly reduce road deaths by strengthening enforcement, improving infrastructure, and using technology and data to support safer driving.
The strategy highlights several areas that directly affect commercial operators, especially those managing vans, HGVs and fleets.
Among the issues MPs will examine are how enforcement can be made more effective, whether the UK’s speed‑limit guidance needs reviewing, and what more can be done to reduce collisions involving inexperienced or older drivers.
With formal consultations now open, MPs are encouraging industry stakeholders — including fleet managers — to share their views before the March deadline.
For businesses running cars, vans or HGVs, this inquiry signals a shift towards tighter enforcement and greater scrutiny of driver competence.
Fleets may need to prepare for more stringent monitoring of safety standards, closer attention to vehicle condition, and potential new requirements for managing younger or older drivers.
The inquiry remains open for written submissions until 13 March. Once complete, the Committee will publish recommendations that could influence fleet policy, insurance risk assessments, and wider road‑safety expectations for years to come.
