Most overnight road closures tend to spark a few questions from passing motorists. But when the convoy in question is transporting a transformer weighing more than 180 tonnes, it's not hard to see why people stop and stare.
National Grid has officially confirmed that a massive, high-voltage electricity transformer is scheduled for delivery to the Imperial Park substation on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
Because of its colossal size and weight, the transformer will be transported via a specialized, multi-axle heavy haulage vehicle. It will travel at a snail's pace and will require a full police escort to safely navigate local roads.
Across the UK, giant transformers are making slow but carefully choreographed journeys to substations as National Grid upgrades the electricity network to cope with rising demand and increasing volumes of renewable energy.

Despite their imposing appearance, transformers perform a relatively simple but essential task.
They adjust voltage levels so electricity can be transmitted efficiently over long distances and then safely distributed to homes, businesses and industrial sites.
