Although concrete is often associated with warm weather and summer construction, in reality, extreme heat can create serious problems when it comes to producing strong, durable concrete.

When temperatures climb too high, moisture can evaporate too quickly, increasing the risk of cracking and weakening the finished structure.
What looks like a perfect summer's day can actually become one of the worst times to pour large volumes of concrete on a major engineering project.
That has left project managers in the unusual position of waiting for cooler weather before carrying out work.
On schemes worth billions of pounds, even a relatively short delay can create knock-on effects for carefully planned schedules, labour, and material deliveries.
Construction teams often work months in advance to coordinate complex operations, making weather-related hold-ups particularly frustrating.
The situation highlights how extreme weather is beginning to affect industries that traditionally wouldn't have considered themselves vulnerable.
Heatwaves are often discussed in terms of public health, transport networks or agriculture, but construction is increasingly finding itself on the frontline as temperatures become more unpredictable.
For massive projects such as HS2 and Hinkley Point C, the stakes are especially high.
These are structures designed to last for generations. A temporary delay is far preferable to rushing work that could compromise quality decades down the line.
Engineers would rather postpone a concrete pour than risk defects that may later require costly repairs.
There's also an irony to the story.
British construction sites are accustomed to preparing for rain, wind and freezing temperatures. Now they're having to develop strategies for conditions that would once have been considered unusually hot for the UK.
Some projects have already adapted by shifting work to cooler times of the day, increasing monitoring of material temperatures and introducing additional cooling measures.
The heatwave delays are a reminder that infrastructure isn't just shaped by engineering and budgets. Sometimes, it comes down to something far less predictable: the weather.
As temperatures continue to rise during the summer months, construction firms may increasingly find that the biggest challenge isn't getting concrete to set—it's stopping it from setting too quickly.
