There was a time when inspecting a bridge, railway structure or rooftop meant one thing: sending someone up there.
Whether it was a worker climbing a ladder, walking across scaffolding, or carefully navigating a roof edge, working at height has long been one of the most common – and riskiest – parts of construction and infrastructure maintenance.
But that may be starting to change.
Across major UK infrastructure projects, drones are increasingly taking over routine inspection work, allowing engineers to gather detailed information without leaving the ground.
What began as an innovative extra tool has rapidly become a standard part of how many projects are managed, with organisations discovering that the safest inspection is often the one that doesn't require a person to climb anything at all.
For decades, height inspections have been considered part of the job. If engineers needed to check a roof, bridge girder, lighting structure or railway asset, the answer was usually simple: access equipment, safety checks, and someone physically going up to look.
The problem is that working at height remains one of the biggest safety challenges in the construction industry.
Even when every procedure is followed correctly, ladders, scaffolding and elevated platforms carry inherent risks. They also create delays, require additional equipment and can add significant costs to projects.
Now drones are changing that.
Modern inspection drones can capture ultra-high-resolution images, thermal data and even three-dimensional models of structures in a fraction of the time required by traditional inspections.
Instead of arranging road closures, erecting access equipment or sending teams onto rooftops, operators can often launch a drone and gather the same information from a safe location below.
The appeal isn't difficult to understand.
A drone doesn't get tired. It doesn't need safety harnesses. It can reach awkward locations in minutes and inspect areas that might otherwise require significant planning to access.
Large infrastructure operators have increasingly embraced the technology for precisely these reasons.
Energy networks, transport operators and construction firms are using drones to examine bridges, power infrastructure, tunnels, roofs and construction sites without exposing workers to unnecessary risk.
In many cases, engineers are no longer climbing merely to look. They're climbing only when work actually needs to be carried out.
That distinction may sound small, but it represents a significant shift in safety thinking.
Rather than putting people in potentially hazardous locations simply to identify a problem, drones can complete the assessment first, allowing maintenance teams to develop repair plans before anyone leaves the ground.
There is another benefit that's becoming increasingly important: speed.
Infrastructure projects operate under intense pressure to minimise disruption. Lane closures, rail possessions and access restrictions can be expensive and unpopular.
Traditional inspections can require large amounts of preparation before any actual inspection begins. Access equipment needs to be arranged, safety measures implemented and permits approved.
Drones dramatically reduce much of that preparation.
A bridge inspection that might once have taken days of planning can often begin within minutes.
Roof surveys can be completed without scaffolding. Progress monitoring across major construction projects can happen weekly, or even daily, without interrupting site operations.
The drone itself is only part of the story. Today's inspection systems collect far more than photographs.
Thermal imaging cameras can identify overheating electrical components. LiDAR sensors can create highly accurate digital models of structures.
Advanced software can compare images over time, helping engineers spot deterioration long before it becomes visible to the human eye.
In some cases, organisations are creating digital twins of infrastructure assets, allowing engineers to study structures remotely and monitor changes over time.
For construction firms and contractors, the growth of drone inspections reflects a broader trend across the industry.
Clients increasingly expect projects to embrace technology that improves safety, efficiency and sustainability.
Reducing work at height can lower risk exposure while also cutting the time and resources required for inspections.
From an insurance perspective, anything that helps reduce the likelihood of workplace accidents is likely to attract attention.
While drones are not eliminating risk altogether, they are helping remove workers from some of the situations where accidents are most likely to occur.
The technology is also becoming more accessible, making adoption easier for businesses that may once have viewed drone operations as something only the largest infrastructure companies could afford.
Hard hats aren't disappearing anytime soon. Construction sites will always require skilled people carrying out complex work in challenging environments.
But the idea that someone must climb a ladder simply to inspect a structure is rapidly becoming outdated.
As drone technology continues to improve, many of Britain's largest infrastructure projects are discovering that the safest, quickest and most efficient view is often the one captured from the air.
