Volvo has launched a new generation of electric trucks designed to handle much longer journeys, with some models offering ranges of up to 700 kilometres on a single charge.

The move marks a major step forward for battery‑powered heavy vehicles, particularly for operators covering long distances.

The headline model in Volvo’s latest line‑up is the FH Aero Electric, which is aimed at long‑haul work traditionally dominated by diesel trucks.

Volvo says the new truck’s extended range brings electric transport closer to being a practical option for day‑long routes, rather than just short or regional journeys.

Alongside the long‑distance FH Aero Electric, Volvo has also updated its FH, FM and FMX Electric trucks.

These models are designed for mixed duties such as regional distribution, construction, refuse collection and utility work, with improved driving ranges of up to around 470 kilometres, depending on specification.

Volvo says the improvements have been made possible by changes to the trucks’ layout, allowing space for more battery capacity, as well as updates to efficiency and performance.

Faster charging has also been built into the new models, helping reduce downtime and making electric trucks easier to fit into normal working patterns.

For fleet operators, the announcement addresses one of the main barriers to electric HGV adoption: range capacity.

Until now, many electric trucks have been best suited to urban or depot‑based work.

Volvo’s latest launch suggests that zero‑emission trucks could increasingly be used on longer and more demanding routes without significantly changing how fleets operate.

Volvo already has one of the widest selections of electric trucks in the market, and the latest models reinforce its strategy of offering electric alternatives across a broad range of transport jobs.

While real‑world range will vary depending on factors such as load, route and driving style, the new line‑up shows how quickly electric heavy vehicles are advancing.

As emissions rules tighten and businesses face growing pressure to reduce their environmental impact, trucks capable of travelling hundreds of kilometres between charges could play a key role in the future of freight and logistics.
