Volvo Trucks has launched the next evolution of its I-Roll system, now featuring an automatic engine stop/start capability — a first in the global heavy-duty truck market. This added function is designed to reduce fuel usage and lower CO₂ emissions, further supporting Volvo’s efforts to cut operational costs and lessen the environmental footprint of road transport.

The introduction comes as Volvo Trucks continues to demonstrate measurable gains in fuel efficiency, highlighted by the Volvo FH Aero winning the 2025 Green Truck Award. The Aero cab  introduced in 2024 — alongside ongoing design refinements — has already delivered notable reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.

Developed internally at Volvo, the enhanced I-Roll function builds on the company’s existing I-See and I-Roll technologies. The system uses continuously updated road and gradient information to determine when the engine can be safely shut off. When the truck is approaching a downhill section, the engine is temporarily switched off, allowing the vehicle to roll without consuming any fuel, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions during that period.

“Our engineers have once again advanced engine efficiency,” said Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. “This new function contributes directly to reducing emissions and fuel costs. As part of our strategy to decarbonize transport, we will continue improving the efficiency of combustion engines while working toward low- and zero-emission solutions.”

The stop/start capability activates at speeds above 60 km/h, depending on conditions such as terrain and temperature. In suitable driving situations, the improved I-Roll system can deliver up to an additional one percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, adding to the savings already gained from existing aerodynamic and powertrain innovations.

The new functionality will be available for the Volvo FH and Volvo FH Aero equipped with the 13-liter diesel engine. Customer ordering opens in November 2025.

Volvo Trucks’ approach to decarbonization includes continued development of efficient combustion engines that run on renewable fuels, alongside its portfolio of battery-electric and fuel cell electric trucks.
