Can Drivers Trust Intelligent Speed Assist?

Drivers are becoming increasingly familiar with the growing list of technology built into modern vehicles.


From automatic emergency braking to lane-keeping assistance, many of these features are designed to make our roads safer.


But a fresh report has highlighted a surprising problem with one of the newest mandatory systems on UK and European roads: some cars appear to be getting the speed limit wrong far more often than expected.


Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), a technology fitted to all new vehicles sold in the UK and Europe since 2024, is designed to help drivers stay within legal speed limits.


Using cameras, GPS data and digital mapping, the system identifies the current speed limit and warns drivers if they exceed it.


In some vehicles, it can even automatically reduce speed if the system believes the driver is travelling too fast.


On paper, it sounds like a sensible safety feature. In reality, however, new testing suggests the technology may not be quite as intelligent as its name implies.


Recent real-world trials found that some ISA systems incorrectly identified speed limits in up to one in four road sign changes.


Researchers discovered that while many vehicles passed official regulatory tests, their performance dropped significantly when measured against individual speed limit changes encountered during normal driving.


The findings have raised concerns because drivers often rely on dashboard displays to confirm speed limits, particularly in unfamiliar areas.


If a vehicle is displaying the wrong information, it could potentially create confusion rather than improve safety.


The issue appears to become more noticeable in real-world driving conditions where roads are rarely perfect.


Temporary speed restrictions, roadworks, partially obscured signs, unusual junction layouts and outdated mapping information can all cause problems.


Some systems reportedly displayed speed limits that don't even exist on UK roads, including 5mph and 100mph limits.

 

While experienced drivers are unlikely to blindly follow incorrect readings without checking the road signs themselves, safety experts worry that repeated errors could undermine confidence in the technology.


After all, drivers are less likely to use safety features if they don't trust them.


The situation becomes even more significant as vehicle automation continues to evolve. Many newer cars are already capable of adjusting cruise control settings automatically based on recognised speed limits.


If a vehicle misreads a sign, it could result in unexpected speed changes that catch drivers off guard.


This doesn't mean ISA is a failure. Road safety organisations continue to support the technology's overall goal of reducing speeding and improving driver awareness.


However, the latest findings suggest the current testing standards may not fully reflect how these systems perform on real roads.


As a result, industry bodies are calling for more realistic testing procedures that focus on how accurately systems respond at every speed limit change rather than measuring performance over long distances.


 The hope is that tougher standards will encourage manufacturers to improve the reliability of their systems before even more advanced automated driving technologies become commonplace.


As cars become increasingly connected and automated, getting the basics right is essential.


If a vehicle struggles to read a roadside speed sign correctly, it serves as a reminder that even the smartest technology can still have blind spots.
