Chinese van maker secures UK launch

A Chinese light commercial vehicle manufacturer is preparing to enter the UK market after securing a distribution agreement with a well‑established automotive group. Foton, which produces a wide range of vans, trucks and pick‑ups, will launch in the UK later this year following a deal with International Motors.

International Motors will be responsible for bringing Foton vehicles to the UK, including importing stock and providing sales and aftersales support.

The company already distributes several well‑known brands across the UK and Europe, giving Foton an established route into what is one of the continent’s most competitive van markets.

The new partnership marks an important step for Foton as it looks to expand its presence outside China.

The manufacturer already operates in several European countries, with its electric vans and trucks in use in markets such as Germany and Italy.

The UK launch is expected to focus initially on light commercial vehicles, including electric models aimed at urban and fleet use.

For UK fleets, the arrival of another manufacturer could increase choice at a time when businesses are under pressure to balance costs, emissions targets and vehicle availability.

Chinese brands have been gaining ground in recent years, particularly in the electric van sector, often positioning themselves as alternatives to established European manufacturers.

International Motors said the agreement supports its strategy of working with forward‑looking manufacturers and expanding its light commercial vehicle offering.

For Foton, the partnership provides access to an existing dealer and support network, which is often one of the biggest challenges faced by new entrants to the UK market.

While full UK specifications and pricing have yet to be confirmed, the move highlights the growing interest Chinese manufacturers have in the UK van sector.

With fleets increasingly open to new brands — particularly where electric vehicles are concerned — Foton’s arrival could add further competition as businesses review their future vehicle options.
